Prerequisite: Ability to confidently downhill ski or snowboard Blue Squares in marginal conditions.
This 1-day course covers the skills to ski tour comfortably uphill by teaching you how to use the gear (enabling quick transitions) and special techniques (kick-turns, body ergonomics, stance, stride, etc). The goal is to make you a confident backcountry skier for both the uphill and downhill travel. It is recommended to pair this course with an AST1+ to learn avalanche awareness.

AST1+ provides an online course, an evening Zoom call and the 'Avalanche Skills Training Handbook' by AvCan. Avi equipment rental is available (transceiver, shovel, probe, backpack) and ski touring equipment or splitboard is required.

AST2 is 4-day course at Whistler Blackcomb with max 6 people. AST2 provides an online course, an evening Zoom call and the 'Decision Making in Avalanche Terrain' by AvCan. Avi equipment rental is available (transceiver, shovel, probe, backpack) and ski touring equipment or splitboard is required.

MAT is a one day mountain based course and expands on the terrain management skills taught in AST 1, which focuses on Simple terrain. With MAT, we will explore and make route plans for Challenging terrain. Our day in the field will practice putting this Route Plan into play, mitigate risk by focusing on your terrain evaluation skills, manage the Avi terrain, and hopefully lots of skiing!

Crevasse Rescue is a two day course. Day 1 in Squamish, we will practice rope skills and learn specific techniques, such as understanding the gear, haul systems (3:1, 5:1, drop loop), rappelling and rope ascending. Day 2 in Whistler, we will practice in snow, manage cornices, practice rappelling, rope up for glacier travel, and learn about crevasse formation and history of glaciers. Ratio is 1:4 or 2:8 instructor to students.
